I think there's an explanation of why the spelling was changed in there as well. He wrote something like this before the premiere of the TV series in 1995. "Evangeriwon" isn't a very good romanization of ヱヴァンゲリオン, though; if you want to fully reflect the new spelling it should be "Wevangeriwon" (since the エ has changed to ヱ), but since the pronunciation remains the same AFAIK, the romanization shouldn't change either.
