Ha, luckily I just finished the whole thing. Actually I started one year ago, but somehow didn't manage to go past that moon city ninja episode. Damn I wish they really removed that one, otherwise I would have known how good the whole series are sooner. I would say ep 10 really put me off and start me watching again, because the contrast that the dude being cheap (saving cheese) and his passion and pride in his country really impressed me.

This show is one of my favorites also. Hard to find good hard scifi stuffs these days (in any media except texts, unfortunately). Really love mechanical design in this series.

The manga has little on corporate-world-in-space stuffs and focuses more on space travel and travellers. Timeline-wise, the anime ends around volume 3 of the manga. I find the anime and the manga complete each other though.

This is one of the shows that made a very good transition from manga to anime. The manga version *coughcoughlurkernetworkcough* goes a bit further, so you might want to check it out to read the heartfelt speech a certain character gives, when they finally reach Jupiter.

I think the sad thing is that I watched Code Geass because I adore Ryvius (same director) and Planetes (same director AND main writer), and the director blandly states that he doesn't want people watching it because they like him. orz.

Planetes is super awesome! Proof that Sunrise can do thoughtful and intelligent. HOWEVER. It does have a manga original, so thought the directorial touch was all theirs and the screenwriting's theirs, the original material isn't.

...quite possibly the best part of this show is how the main female lead...one of those perpetually replicated 'love solves everything' girls...got her ass handed royally to her by cold, dark reality. I had to watch the final 3 episodes again and again just to see that happening...god I loved it...
