There are many things wrong with it, especially in the latter half. Fact is that Tomino just lost his sharpness. There was Turn A, which was very awesome and a milestone but Gainar just doesn't reach such a level overall, despite of the win ingredients in it. If there's one anime which is the epitome of the mecha genre and is the demonstration of this decade in terms of mecha, then it's Eureka Seven. Made of awesomeness, mecha references, electro music references and Gainax. And of course there is also Top!2 aka Diebuster.
