Disappearing, adagio.

Kanon 2006

If there is one word to perfectly describe Shiori’s arc, it would be the Japanese word, kuyashii, meaning regrettable or mortifying, of which both meanings are fully shown out over the course of this arc, from the mortification of Yuiichi being helpless to truly prevent the impending fate of Shiori, to the regret which Kaori faced when she gave up acknowledgment of her sister.

This was truly a heart-wrenching arc and possibly the most emotionally packed one as well. From the initial confession of Kaori that Shiori is truly her sister to Shiori’s trademark line of “…they’re called miracles because they don’t exist.” down to Shiori’s confession and subsequent line of “Was I able to smile?”, played all the way along with the perfect accompaniment of “pure snows“, this was probably the arc that I felt the most intense emotions for yet.

The sudden disappearance of Shiori right after this episode also fully mirrors how her life has been, a happy and innocent one, yet sadly cut short by the cruelty and infairness of life. It also shows her strength in facing her own fate as well, as with this gesture, she clearly shows the intention to leave with happy memories, instead of creating even more sad ones for her beloved ones, which, actually makes one feel even more mortifying in a way.

This is indeed one of the most powerful arcs in Kanon, and just like Shiori, the episodes were cut down to a mere 3. Such unfairness and cruelty can only deepen my dislike of Ayu, who is the mastermind behind this episode shortening. Don’t hate KyoAni, blame Ayu!

This is another of those episodes that can make a grown man cry. Or a grown otaku cry, more specifically. T_T

Dammit, this is why I hated Kanon in the first place!
    How did I become such a masochist anyways? ;_;

Oh well, we’re going straight into Ayu’s arc… but it seems KeyAni will splice lots of Nayuki goodness in it. They better do it right (though I wanted my Nayuki ending! ;_; ).

Damn it Ayu, I love you, but why do you have to do this to us?

I wasn’t ready for that kind of departure, since Shiori really enjoyed every second spend with Yuuichi. But the most shocking scene definitely was when Shiori tells Yuuichi about her failed attempt to end her life, but the impact of those memories were 1000 % more powerful than TOEI and it’s crappy work with that part over 4 years ago. Shiori reminds me of Jim Carrey, when he tries to cry after the death of Lou’s father in Majestic. Those tears of Shiori were from happiness, a feeling that Yuuichi and Ayu remind her.

Another masterpiece thanks to KyoAni. We’ll miss you Shiori, truly.

P.D. That kiss on the cheek was sweet…

that last paragraph was brilliantly written kurogane. my initial reaction to watching the episode was that i would’ve liked a bit more closure, but after reading this, i’m not sure that would be the best approach. it seems a bit more like u-1 to not push his grief/mourning onto everybody else, but rather just swallow it and move on with life.

I was SO hoping for Kaori and Shiori to walk home from school together, but I suppose it wasn’t meant to be :(…..

Though it’s doubtful to happen……. I really hope that KyoAni will take a few minutes next week to give Kaori some closure……

cause that would suck to FINALLY accept Shiori’s fate, and then have no real chance to say goodbye…….

I really liked this episode…..the dialouge throughout was brilliant….and the kiss at the fountain was super sweet……

@ Triple A: I don’t think Shiori got shafted in terms of screen time, because her arc kind of spread throughout all the episodes…..I agree though……one more episode would probably do it more justice :)

@Sagematt: Can’t wait for some Nayuki goodness next week myself :)……..

This is probably the best ending for Shiori-chan without outright having a Shiori-chan ending, I guess.

    @ TripleA

Agreed; Kanon needs more Shiori, less Ayu and Makoto.

I’m not a person to cry or get emotional over tv shows or movies, but this episode really did get my eyes a bit damp at the end.

Judging from the next episode preview, Shiori is not dead and will have some place in the next episode (Yuuichi is shown to be praying whilst saying her name, which suggests that she is fighting for survival). In the game, her fate is only shown in the spring, which would place it well after the conclusion of Nayuki and Ayu’s stories; one can assume the same will be the case in the anime.

I’d bet my house that Shiori will survive. Her story is constructed in such a manner that no other outcome would do the build up justice. Shiori’s story is fundamentally about her gaining the will to live by interacting with Yuuichi; when coupled with Kanon’s central theme of miracles, it’d make no sense for her to actually die.

As for Nayuki: Seriously, KyoAni were never in a million years going to go with the Nayuki ending. Not only does it necessitate the absence of all the other Kanon girls (meaning that it could only take place at the expense of Ayu’s story), it’s much more straightforward and predictable than the other girls’ stories, and consequently lacks their emotional highs and lows. Moreover, Nayuki’s story just doesn’t lend itself to the harem anime format – of all the girls’ Yuuichi could ‘end up’ with, she would be the worst for the story as a whole.

I can’t believe I have yet to see a blog mention this: fast-forward to 8:34, Rumi from ONE shows up. She is also there clapping a little bit later.

Would it mean that KyoAni will animate ONE next? Pure speculation… But Ayu, Nayuki and Makoto also did their cameo on AIR, and then Kanon got animated two years later.

If KyoAni does animate ONE, they should officially change their name to KeyAni :D
