Moe blob: Uzumaki’s take on the term is quite good. I’ll only add that “moe blob” was firstly used as an insult moe-haters said toward moe characters (Mikuru was the first “moe blob”, I should have that motivational poster with her face shopped onto a slime somewhere), but most of the time the ones insulting didn’t bother to see beyond the character’s moe traits (some characters labelled as moe-blobs are more than just a miserable little pile of moe), which is why its first use also got some retaliation from our moe-loving folks.

QUALITY: Once again, Uzumaki’s definition is good enough. But he forgot to put the term in caps, since that’s what makes QUALITY differ from quality.

*phew* Sorry for such a deductive take on the term instead of the more used inductive take on it. It’s just that since the latter is the one most used, I (IMHO correctly) assumed that going for the former was the best way to show the term in a whole new dimension, instead of explaining what it has already been said. I do hope that short essay served to clarify most doubts about the term.

ps. I used the term in caps most of the time, but I do use it normally in lowercase.

ps2. How do you call a gar character anyways? We have moekko for moe characters, but we don’t have such a term for gar. And I didn’t want to use garkko because it sounds really ugly, it probably is a wrong use of the suffix, and I don’t want to be THAT much of a weeaboo.

GAR: Seeing how loosely 4chan has been using the this term ever since its conception (one quick look at SaiGAR submissions will easily prove that), and also seeing at the very roots of moe, I’ve come to the conclusion that GAR is how we males go moe (燃える, burning with passion) for a male character.

You see, we go moe for anime chicks who are cute (or whatever your fetish is), and we have a very similar reaction when we go GAR for badass guys. Almost the same reaction, even when the definition is on the other side of the spectrum.

It’s important to note how we would never go moe for a male with the same traits as a moekko. We use to call those “faggots” around here - unless they are traps, of course (and even with traps the standards for both moe and GAR change in such a way that I better leave that discussion for another time), and any male going moe for such a guy would be called a fag too. Which is why our prototype for male moe (a GAR character) is the completely opposite of it.

Now, given the use we have for GAR, it’s kinda easy to notice how it also applies to manly characters (yet another term/category, which is highly compatible with GAR while not being the same thing) such as Guts or Kenshiro.

It’s also kinda scary how much this term has evolved, since there are so many cases where you can apply it that I almost lost count. For example (also revealed by daily 4chan browsing and looking at the former table), we are also considering badass girls such as Nanoha as GARmoe, which clearly is an example for “You got your ‘male moe‘ in my moe female character!”, meaning that she’s got traits of both moekko and GAR. Yet another example, female character being GAR (Black Lagoon’s Reby/Levy is an easy choice), which means they have GAR traits, or to better dissect this, we go moe GAR for her “male moe” traits (badass-ery, mostly) instead of going moe for her nonexistant moekko traits.

So what, now we have a word that means the exact opposite of what it’s supposed to mean, depending on context? Is that quality?

“Garmoe” is obviously those two words combined and manifests as a cutesy character who is also a badass.

Since a trap is a boy who makes a very convincing girl, and as such is okay to fap to, a reverse trap is a girl who makes a very convincing boy, and is also okay to fap to.

A “moe blob” is a character who exists solely to incite a moe feeling in someone who sees them. Most eroge girls are moe blobs. I would say that a character who has at least some point besides being cute and sweet and designed to give someone an erection is not a moe blob. Also, those who are some kind of amusing commentary on the moe phemonenon are not moe blobs.

“Quality” was likely born from sarcasm, as something’s “quality” is usually inversely proportional to it’s quality. Commonly used to describe the anime Musashi Gundoh, which has unbelieveably poor animation for 2006, and is in general cheesy. However, if this changed, MG would cease to be “quality.”
