Lullaby of a fox cub. ~berceuse~

Kanon 2006

Yeah… I wasn’t kidding when I said I would cry during this episode. In fact, I still have some tears in my eyes right now as I type this…

Makoto’s condition slowly worsens as she’s starting to find it hard to hold chopsticks. At school, Yuiichi reminisces back on the time he found Makoto as an injured fox cub and brought her back to recuperate in the Minase house secretly for half a month, as after that, he had to return home. He starts to wonder what might have caused this, with his act of kindness that day..

After school, Makoto is waiting for him again and Yuiichi treats her to the usual _nikuman_ on the way home. He casually mentions that he has a lot of money, thus Makoto asks him to buy a 100 yen bracelet with two strings on it for her. Breathing a sigh of relief it isn’t something expensive (there were random shots of a jewelry store when Yuiichi was saying that he has a lot of money earlier XD), he gladly buys it.

Back home, Makoto’s condition has worsened to the point where she’s using spoons to eat (Akiko-san’s curry rice tonight, wai~~!) and Yuiichi has to help her brush her teeth. Later at night, Makoto sneaks in to sleep with Yuiichi again, with Piro. The sleepless Yuiichi decides to sneak out to the Monomi Hills to organize his thoughts.

He’s suprised when he finds Makoto following him, as she’s scared he’ll leave her alone again, and Makoto starts to remember about the times when she was a fox, prompting Yuiichi to shout and snap her out of it. He reassures her that he won’t be leaving her any more, and the both return home to bed.

The next day, Yuiichi tries to seek an audience with Amano but fails, and is suprised when Makoto isn’t waiting for him as usual. He waits until sunset to return home to find out that Makoto is missing and starts to look around everywhere for her. Makoto shows up very much later, dirty and weakened with a high fever, mumbling that Piro has disappeared and she was looking for it.

The next day, Yuiichi is preparing to leave for school, when Makoto stops him. He decides to stay home for the day and takes care of Makoto. Later at night, Amano-san calls him out and he tells her that Makoto is regressing to a child after the fever she had. Amano reveals that she should have disappeared when she had the fever, but it looks like Makoto’s affection for Yuiichi is still keeping her alive, albeit in an uncomplete form. She warns him that if Makoto suffers another fever, that would most probably be the end, and leaves Yuiichi with the advice to stay strong, even if he is about to face a lot of pain.

Yuiichi decides to tell Akiko and Nayuki the truth about Makoto when he returns home, and Akiko reveals that she’d known about Yuiichi keeping Makoto back then, and mentioned that it liked the sound of the bells on her purse ringing, which attracted her. He informs them both that he’ll be skipping school for a while in order to take care of the now-regressing Makoto, who slowly turns more and more in to a child as the days pass by…

…. I shouldn’t have wrote the summary above… I cried another round again orz…. Dear god, I hope people don’t think I’m a wuss after this…

Extremely emotionally well-done episode by KyoAni really, and they managed to include some funnier things which are in context with the story, to alleviate the sad aura permeating the episode. Personally, the most touching thing of the episode was the reason why Makoto chose the bell bracelet, revealed by Akiko-san who, unsurprisingly knew about her (Yuiichi should have just asked her openly, she’s famed for her One-Second replies anyways :). I don’t think that this part was in the previous Kanon anime incarnation, and anyways, Kyo Ani is slowly pushing Makoto’s sad and touching story on us viewers, allowing us to fully appreciate and emphasise the story. The first Kanon series made me sad, this episode made me cry, twice, and I expect to shed some tears on everytime I will be rewatching this in the future.

I think I can only thank god that I’m not listening to “and you” right now, since I’m on my home PC. The song is still firmly stuck in my head though orz..

Well, I can relate to crying during Kanon, but I only cried this episode suting Mishio’s explanations and a bit on her story, not during the Makoto scenes(though I did do that during the last 2 episodes), which I didn’t expect really.
Next epsiode seems to be even worse, but I wonder how long the Makoto arc is going to be, since I didn’t see any scenes in the preview about the ‘you know what’ scene on Monomi Hill from the game, so it might be another 2 episodes, instead of only 1 more, as I first expected.

having seen kanon 2002, i thought for sure i’d be ready for makoto’s story again, but just like the first one, it has hit me hard. even harder in some ways, as makoto’s story has had more episodes than the original one did to traumatize me with :( i was crying throughout the whole episode, and i know i’m going to next week. the story is just so sad :(

and given the title of next week’s episode, it’s for certain that makoto’s arc ends next week. not to mention i recall seeing both yuuichi and makoto on monomi hill in one of the scenes for next week’s preview.

Wuss. If you have to cry, cry long and loud like a man >.> Project your anguish into the heavens.

S’okay, I didn’t cry, but came near. I’ll probably ball like a newborn infant next episode.*sigh* I’m such a Makoto fanboy. I’d hoped that all of the stories would have been intertwined, but at least I’ll have the rest of the series to form a new attachment (maybe Akiko?) or more that shouldn’t tear at the old heartstring.

Can’t say that I cried, but this episode was pretty emotional and gave me much to think about. It’s much better done than in the original series in my opinion.

I almost cried yesterday with this episode, but I couldn’t… but now I’m sure I’ll cry next week when… damn, I can’t think of it, can’t accept the fact of Makoto leaving at this point…. damn you KyoAni… you’ll make my suffer at least one more time this year…

And yes… thanks to you Koru-senei, my passion for “And you..” came back full-loaded to me…

@Ravage: That scene is actually in the Kanon 2006 Trailer, so I didn’t feel all that spoiled by it (even though I never saw Kanon 2002, which I’m glad I didn’t)

Makoto’s story really started to hit me hard in the middle of Kanon 08 – just as the music started to peak, you see Makoto staring in awe at the wedding dress in the store window. Everything just became depressing from then on. :\

    “Zutto… zutto issho ni irareru…”

I didn’t know anything at all what Kanon was about, but after the first episode of this production I could tell that I’d be bawling like a baby at some stage eventually

This ep had several moments of waterworks, but we’re not yet at AIR levels of emasculation

    Got me heart-aching when I listen to Amano-Kyon’ichi’s scene…

So far the only anime-ralated stuff that made me shed tears was Planetarian (recommend if you watched, or liked Kanon and Air)

I would be really empty if Makoto’s going to be gone from this show so early…

Planetarian was the saddest, from all that I encountered…

Even though there were 2 people in this story only, it really captures the emotion at the very end.

I demand KyoAni to animate Planetarian and Clannad + Tomoyo After!

Well, I deliberately avoided your blog until I cleared Makoto’s story in the game in case you accidentally spoiled me again. lol

Maybe I should’ve took a break after clearing her story and before watching the episode, because the angsty feeling was amplified for me.

Oh dear, I guess so. I haven’t played the game yet, can’t read moonspeak now orz. If it was voiced then maybe, but well, for now, anime and manga only it is for me :x
