Chokotto Sister

Chokotto Sister

One of the summer anime titles due to debut next week, I checked out the source manga out of boredom and Stripey you should too. The story revolves around Haruma who was given an *imouto* as a present for Christmas by Santa Claus one day because of a wish he made years ago (I love how Ms. Santa said that it took time for the present to be ready when Haruma asked why he got it only now). Abruptly saddled with the responsibilty to care for Choko, as he named her, the story follows the daily lives, trials and tribulations faced by Haruma and the residents of the apartment complex which he lives in.

The manga itself is fanservice galore and borders on soft porn, with the mangaka not even bothering to at least keep it decent. The art is extremely good and is of the realistic style. Fanservice angles are expertly done and screentone has never been used so effectively, which makes the manga worth a read if only for the art.

The characters are also the stronger point of the series as everyone is extremely likable from the naively honest Choko to the sexually harassing Makoto. Haruma as the protagonist is one of the more likable ones from series’ of this type and his character development is done very well, in between all the fanservice.

So far, only the first 3 volumes and 6 chapters of the 4th volume are out, scanlated by the awesome Kotonoha team. Eagerly awaiting the rest from them, keep up the good work guys :).

I think Stripey wrote that book, myself, to judge by some of its contents… and I honestly think that he should follow up this series, since Jason Miao advertised it himself. :D

If they keep to the manga storylines, they should be fine – at least Haruma has a spine, morals, and a crush worth crushing on… and not everyone’s after his affections, which makes it more ‘real’ than some stories I can name…

I agree, I was put off by the subtle perverted fanservice, but as long as they keep a true brother/sister relationship, it’s very cute and the characters are likable.

That’s the best part of the manga – he hasn’t a bit of siscon in him (well, maybe a trace amount – certainly less than Stripey), and he’s treating her like a sister, rather than some sort of object for a fetish, including making SURE she walks around with clothes, and keeping her from getting overly attached to him. And not ogling her – that’s a big bonus there. And even the relationships aren’t always happy, but they don’t get overly melancholy either – the unrequited crushes aren’t causing everyone to become suicidal, and he does care about his sister without thinking of taking advantage of her trusting nature and lack of understanding when it comes to human relationships.

There’s still quite a bit of ecchi fanservice (although thankfully, it tends to be restricted to the landlady and his drunken neighbor), at least in later volumes.

I was a bit worried about his anime, but the manga looks like it might turn out to be my kind of comedy. I do hope they don’t accidentally slip in some incest though. Incest is bad. BAD INCEST!

[…] Since the manga had stopped just short of being hentai, I was really glad for the limited fanservice in the anime which served as mere garnishing to enhance the magical atmosphere. (Argh, I can’t believe I just labelled lolicious panty flashes as ‘magical’. I need rehab.) In fact, if the debut is any indication of the series’ tone, I would expect ChokoSis to be a sweet series focused on sibling love with some nice poignant moments. I had particularly enjoyed Onii-chan’s flashback. The crushing revelation at the hospital and the earnest bedside prayer were some of the best moments for me this ep. […]
