It's much easier to think like this... The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is focused on the first novel interspersed with the "omake" parts of the series( the murder mystery, school festival etc..) to make up for the lack of episodes. KyoAni is riding on such a huge wave of success and sitting on such a extraordinarily exceptional source material to say that it will be heresy if they do not make more of it.
