Canvas2 Wrap Up

DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED CANVAS2. I REPEAT **DO NOT** READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED CANVAS2 YET!

I will not be responsible for whatever you read after the picture.

Canvas2

Ok. I managed to finish off the last 4 episodes of Canvas2. So let’s see, Hiroki ends up with Elis at the end, starts to paint again, goes all the way with her finally, all in the romantic city of Paris, where passions and art run high. As for the rest, Kiri-san is still a teacher, Yanagi is taking up Hiroki’s vacated position, Shouta is progressing at his pottery and Tomoko dies… wait, Tomoko dies?

**WHAT THE ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HELL????!!!!!!!!!!**

Ok, you damn producers, you make develop the show to a Kiri x Hiroki pairing then you *deus ex machina*’s it to a Elis x Hiroki one, with a post-coitus scene included for good measure….. never mind…… But **YOU KILLED OFF TOMOKO?!!!** WHAT THE FUCKING HELL?!!

……… DarkMirage, please take me along to Japan next time. Don’t worry, I bring my own “supplies” of course.

Must. Resist. Urge. To. Break. Canvas2. DVD.

    Canvas 2 ending sucked big time. I was so bloody disappointed. I wanted Kiri x Hiroki as well. T.T

    Hmm Tomoko didn’t die. :) If you can stomach a re-watch from ep 15 onwards, you’ll catch some nuances that may make you change your mind about the ending. :)

    I thought that Tomoko lived – it’s just that he suddenly went over to Ellis, which kinda/sorta made sense/didn’t, depending on whether you accepted his internal justifications or not (she got him painting, or she guilted him into it).

    LOL… Didn’t we all thought “WTF?” when they Tomoko pretended to die in the last episode….
    PLUS, yes.. I hate the ending of Canvas 2 also… I kinda predicted it, but i never wished for it (these weird “i know it was coming” moment)

    As I said beofre Hiroki was a prick, but I don’t recall Tomoko biting the big one. Wow, since your anger will subside soon would you be willing to lay siege to KyoAni if the refuse to make a second season of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu?

    Tomoko didn’t die. Watch through the credits of the last episode.

    And while I prefer Elis to Kiri by an infinite ammount, the last second Elis x Hiroki ending still left a weird taste in my mouth. It does make sense in a couple of ways, but it really doesn’t work in the context of all the Hiroki x Kiri stuff that the second half of the series shoves at us. Not to mention that the magnitude of fuckover given to Kiri is simply brutal. Luckily, I never liked her character much, as I always found her to be just plain boring. However, if I had liked her, even just a little bit, then my views on this ending would probably be rather negative instead of ambivalent.

    Your review brought back some rather unplesant memories.

    I was enjoying the cruel little digs that Kiri got in to Ellis, but Kiri was doomed early on when Hiroki went home to bring Ellis back while standing up Kiri.

    Hiroki was a dishonest sack of **** in his dealings. When he went to paris to screw Ellis I was reminded of Roman Polanski.

    Tomoko didn’t die. I have developed a habit of watching the ending credits for anime series since you don’t know what is going to happen

    I’m not exactly sure on wheather did Tomoko die or not. Yes, I did watch till the ending credits finished and I saw that part of Tomoko waking up. But I interpreted it as her waking up in heaven.

    Of course, the major question here is why did they include that scene in so suddenly and with a lot of vagueness going about. I’m now grabbing the 1st Canvas anime to see if it’s related or some sort of homage.

    Hehe…

    Ep24 seldom fails to invoke a strong reaction in people. Probably the most “WTF?!” episode of its’ season. ;) I still remember how floored most of the Hiroki&Kiri shippers were( including me), and how the near-dead Hiroki&Elis shippers( think Hanai after Yakumo gave Harima a love bento) suddenly gained a +1024^1000000 boost to VITALITY.

    Took me some time and some re-watching to reanalyse the series and pick out the clues. Made me appreciate the series more. Of course, there are detractors who slam the ending.

    ~~~~ ~~~~
    As for Tomoko, I am willing to believe that she was waking up in hospital, but rest assured, if they make a sequel, and it is revealed that Tomoko is dead, Tomoko fans will raze the studio.
    You should have seen the outrage. Tomoko’s scene was the second-most talked about after the Hiroki&Elis ending. “Damn producers yanking our chains!” was the most common comment. :P
    I also remember swearing a lot during the Tomoko-aeroplane scene.
    ~~~~ ~~~~

    Cheers.

    Oh yeah, to add on, I don’t really recommend the first Canvas. Other than a source of cameos in Canvas2, it ain’t really stellar material.

  13. Kurogane Shiroikaze Said,

    @ryohei: It is not exactly clear that if she had died or not.

    As a matter of fact, I was actually more outraged about Tomoko’s ending rather than the sudden Hiroki x Elis change. I really do not have much to say about that.

    For some reason though, I don’t feel like watching any anime right now _|-|0””….

    Coincidentally, I also just finished watching this series and when I watched the ending, I thought -

    OMFG

    It’s a “good ending”, but I really do not like how it turned about. Could you say ZOMG plot twist? I really didn’t like how it ended. It kept building up towards a certain ending and then turn it around just like that. I felt like my intelligence was being insulted.

    Main criticism: Hiroki as the main male lead is too boring. He’s not a wimp but he was, for the most part, a blank slate devoid of any display of emotions or personality. While his character may be written that way due to his background, I still feel that he was a boring person to watch since most of the time, his reactions were almost non-descript.

    Not to mention that the whole series was 12 episodes too long. The ‘girl of the week’ episodes were weak, especially since most if not all of them had only a passing interest in Hiroki as a teacher, not as a lover. If they had cut it down to a normal 13 episode series to focus on the main characters triangle relationship, the series wouldn’t feel like it was dragging its feet, which I felt was moving that way after watching around the 7th episodes. I was actually wishing for a boxcutter to appear in the middle of the episode so someone could slash their wrist for TEH DRAMA effect.

    Maybe I feel kinda spoiled after watching Shuffle!, but I really didn’t like how Canvas 2 ended. And it’s not because my favourite character didn’t end up with Hiroki. Rather, it’s how they kept building up towards a particular ending, only to turn it around in a somewhat illogical way. Dammit, if you’re trying to make an ending towards a particular girl, at least show some early hints of it in the last few episodes instead of ambushing us in the last episode.

    And what’s with that ending scene of that Tomoko “dying” in the plane? It looked like she tried to commit suicide. WTF??? That scene wasn’t necessary at all.

    In short, a “harem” anime that went on 12 episodes too long, not to mention an uninteresting male lead and a shitty ending. What a waste of my time.

    And oh, first time commenting here. Hello~

    Hello there, Fat Cat Lim. Hope you’ve enjoyed my blog.

    I agree on how convulted they made the ending for Canvas2. It was so totally unexpected given the whole development of the Kiri x Hiroki angle and I was actually into supporting them.

    Hiroki isn’t as half bad as most of the other harem protagonists, just too bad the ending totally destroyed all my liking for him.

    The other girls are actually much more interesting to watch than the main love triangle actually. Even better that they don’t really have an interest in the main protagonist. Canvas2 can be better classified as school drama/piece of life anime for me now, thanks to that.

    But for really dramatic harem anime… yeap…. SHUFFLE! is 4TW.

    Canvas2 was a decent anime up till the ending. I don’t mind suprise ending but I hate ending that make no sense. While I am more partial to Kiri, I have enjoy lots of anime where my girl didn’t win. This whole 180 degree turn about is as bad as ypou can get.

    Shuffle has its share of flaws but it is definetely better then Canvas2.

    My heart sank when Hiroki left on the train and Kiri was crying. It’s not like I didn’t see it coming, but the last few episodes had me dreading the conclusion. Elis is like his daughter since he was raising her since the accident. I couldn’t help but to shout at the screen when the credits started to roll and the last scene with Hiroki and Elise getting it on in bed had me bashing my head on the keyboard. Funny enough, my gf was quite pleased with my frustration because she felt the same thing about the way it ended.

    There was a part where Hiroki said he turned Kiri down because he felt himself unworthy. Hes right. That douche…

    I enjoyed most of the series even though I agree on it being better suited for 13 episodes. The ending really annoyed me. Kiri crying because she got dropped from one second to the next without prewarning, Tomoko looking towards death, Hiroki in bed with his “little sister”. Reading here and watching the credits made me think Tomoko survived but that didn’t really rescue the end.

    I know I cant believe that the guy picked his own Cousin which he treats as a little sister over his childhood friend that confessed to him! The ending really went all the way to rock bottom for me. The show was okay as well it wasnt that great when I found out that it was kinda like a Da Capo anime. Which obviously ends up with the brother ending up with his sister. I mean do you know how sick that sounds?! Honestly…Once I saw the very ending of Canvas after the credits..I thought I was honestly going to puke! That should not be the ending! I mean honsetly they screwed it up sooooo much its not even funny.
    It was leaning to a Kiri relationship and all of a sudden boom! The thing goes to rotate 180 degrees…I can’t stand it when they do that! A perfectly good anime with good graphis and the ending totally ruined it AS IN RUINED IT COMPLETLEY!!!!
    Augh……I wanted to throw something at the guy so he’ll wake up! and not pick Elis.
    And with Elis, I felt like I was going to wack her with a frying pan or something really hard like a mallet or somethin.
    I dont know about you guys but I think Kiri should have accepted Shin-chan’s confession since the guy was going to pick Elis anyways.
    And Shin-chan seemed fairly decent anyways.
    I never really hated the guy, cause I understood how he felt since I also am a fellow artist (not professionaly but you get the idea). Augh…Know what they should have a Canvas3 and now Kiri should dump the guy.
    I mean she confessed twice and she kept on getting dumped all the time!
    And she didnt get mad at him or anything, Thats why I like Kiri the best in the anime. She’s not an obsessive character like Elis. Once she knows whats happening she will obviously try to fix it and apologize not like that stuborn brat Elis. Even though her past was a little sad its not like she was gonna die tomorrow or something geez. The past is in the past…
    Ok I’ve been rumbling on for quite some time now..
    But I really did like this series but I ABSOULUTLEY HATED THE ENDING!
    If anyone else feels the same way I do let your vooice be heard! n-n

  29. rei Said,

    @Kas
    “And she didnt get mad at him or anything”
    - she DID get mad…when Hiroki talk nothing else except about work, food & TV shows.

    “She’s not an obsessive character like Elis. ”
    -she IS an obssessive character. Always went on “Hiroki this, Hiroki that…” in front of Shin-chan. It’s pretty DAMN annoying

    “Once she knows whats happening she will obviously try to fix it and apologize not like that stuborn brat Elis. ”
    -she was supposed to apologize to Elis NOT to Hiroki. Elis is the one who got hurt mentally by her.

    And it seems that you forget, Elis is the one who told Hiroki to date Kiri in ep. 23. She even left the house early in ep. 24 so that Hiroki can be with Kiri. Yes, Elis did re-confessed on the phone. But if Hiroki DOES have STRONG feeling for Kiri, he wouldn’t have to go after Elis. Since he choose Elis over Kiri, this proved that Elis is more significant to his life than Kiri.

    “The past is in the past…”
    -LOL. As you said, the past is the past. Hiroki decided to forget his past love with Kiri & move on with Elis, the one who always support his REAL dream of becoming an artist & the one who release him from keep on becoming the prisoner of the past.

    Kiri should have just forget about her past relationship with Hiroki & move on with Shin-chan.

  30. Aren D. Said,

    April 30, 2007 @ 6:31 pm

    Hmm… Maybe Hiroki loved Elis all the time, even since they was kids, but wasn’t honest with himself and make illusion that he likes Kiri. There is very few hints in whole series, but if you sit down and rethink everything careful, you might find them.

    But still.. ending kinda sucks. I really feel bad for Kiri =( , Hiroki completely ruined her Cristmas ( i would like meeting Shin-chan and Kiri in hotel after she talks with Hiroki)

    Tomoko’s dying… hem…. WTF??? what the hell that girl doing here in first place? She has weak health, thats enough, why put in unnecessary death scene? What will happened if she die? She has strong connection with Elis mostly, she had something in beginning with Hiroki, but that was forgotten.

    I have feeling that Canvas 2 was made in a hurry, many things are missing or forgotten or unnecessary.

    oh my…it’s not the ending that i somehow rebuke….it’s the flow of events compared to the ending….was it right to overly emphasize and build up the importance of one girl over the other and in the end unmindingly and suddenly break it all apart in the end….so much for a 180 degrees diversion of love there…grabe men,…biglaan naman…i wonder if it was realistic….the flow of events didn’t somehow show any second thoughts about hiroki’s feeling for elis…it makes his change of heart doubtful..even if i tried to watch it again..just the same.. it seems to lack something to have that kind of ending quite acceptable…but..i somehow like some parts…still fun to watch…

    Am I the only one who thinks that the Elis x Hiroki relationship was so VERY wrong? They’re meant to be cousins and aside to that fact they had a brother and sister relationship for most of their lives!

    The ending was unvbelievely brutal to watch (regardless of whom you liked most out of the two females) especially when the Kiri x Hiroki relationship was built up so much to that point…

    I vote the ending down :/

  36. Woruta Said,

    i think there was more information / background story that emphasized Kiri but you can speculate a bit why he stil ended up with Elis.
    .
    Why Kiri and not Elis ?

    because in the episode where he was in shock seeing Yanagi with Kiri in tokyo and saying he will never paint again, laying on the floor in tears with brushes and paints in front of a canvas. (the reason obviously is being Kiri and maybe another feeling of backstabbing by Yanagi.

    reasons that Kiri didnt end up with Hiroki could be :

    Elis overcomes her trauma of red for her love for Hiroki.

    Hiroki overcomes his trauma or shock rather and paints again for Elis, this is something that Kiri did for him in the passed, but cant do for him in the present (she sorta realized this when she falls in tears at the trains seeing him with that painting in his arms…she says something like i guess we will be back to being only friends.

    all in all Yanagi was secretly in love with kiri, Hiroki was certainly in love with Kiri.
    Hiroki was an indesicive idiot who didnt want to ruin their friendship
    and Yanagi abused this goody act of Hiroki (sneaking out of the tent, stealing his picture idea and saying that he would never let Hiroki have Kiri)

    of course Hiroki knew Yanagi liked Kiri (he saw him sneaking out of the tent)
    atleast Yanagi was dishonest in getting his way but was honest about his feelings for Kiri, hiroki kept it all for himself wanting to keep the peace with the three of them. that is how it felt for me

    but the ending passed ,although i stil think Hiroki is an indesicive jerk hurting feelings of people left and right because of his ignorance and walking the path of no conflict. spaced out…escaping reality ?

    in the end he finally made up his mind and he decides to hurt Kiri in the process AGAIN, the first time he was in shock because of his insecurity he created a reality that wasnt even true (yanagi with hiroki in tokyo) and draws his conclusions again (like he did in the classroom and when yanagi sneaks out of the tent)

    he meets up with her again goes all snuggly and happy with Kiri for the whole show and then bam dumps Kiri , lets go Elis on the last episode :) nice Twister ….

    Hiroki is a nice guy ? ma ne..so so

    like elis says he spaces out.
    he is absent in his own world a little too much for my taste (paranoia?)

    … he doesnt see the truth for whatever reason for the entire show regarding his feelings towards Kiri i think…

    Elis therefor was a surprise, although he seemed to care for her as a brother a lot which was nice…. although that kindness was shot down in the last episode

    this twist of the the once conciderate tapping on the head when she confesses to him for the first time where he shows no emotion towards a mutual feeling whatsoever and complete 360 indecent relationship ending…

    well indecent to the eye of the beholder , they do indeed love eachother but for me they should have stayed a family.

    i feel sad for Kiri, i hope she finds a kind man in the ova if there is going to be one, hell she could even end up with Yanagi, atleast that jerk loved her lots and was honest to himself about that.

    anyways wall of text lots of opinion based on my personal experience watching the show, i really enjoyed it for the most part, the ending was still nice preferences aside.
    Kiri forever :)
