SOS-dan in Space.

Suzumiya Haruhi

Yuki episode this time. Thanks to the efforts of the Haruhi novel translators, I got spoiled ahead, so I practically knew ahead what to expect. But I still had an enjoyable time, thanks to the funny additions KyoAni sprinkled around in the episode.

First off, in the CG sequences, the bridge crew for each of the SOS-dan fleets were different. Haruhi had a fair share of space alien types, Mikuru has the cat-with-a-manly-body things as hers, Yuki’s bridge bunnies were all clones of her and Itsuki’s ones are Henohenomoheji men. Suspiciously, we don’t see Kyon’s one. Maybe his bridge bunnies are all Mikuru’s, not surprising coming from him. His pervertness seems to have increased lately. Oh, there is a big Gundam reference as well :).

The Yuki camp would definitely love this episode, as it is her character development episodes. I found her pretty cute, in her own stoic way this episode and it seems that KyoAni has somehow made here much more warmer than she was in the previous episodes. And damn! She really defined multi-tasking this episode. Poor keyboard though, hope it’s those new replaceable ones. Should’ve let her use an external USB keyboard :).

KyoAni’s habit of perfection is way on top this episode as well. Notice how detailed they drew the Ethernet and VGA ports, not to mention the DOS command prompt windows and the WinXP look. Though I wonder why they chose to put Epson as the spoof brand of choice. Does Epson manufacture notebooks? I also wonder how much did they spend on the CG for this episode. Looks so detailed that I suspect that it must’ve been prepared a long time ago.Maybe for a spinoff perhaps? Oh, and any doujinsoft groups want to make Iteza no Hi III? I’d gladly play it.

Well, can’t wait for the next episode though. Gakuen-sai episode with tons of Mikuru and LOL FANG-tan as well and the Haruhi translators seem to be starting up on the novel chapter as well. I really love the outfits they wear for the school festival though. Looks very elegant and pure, not fanservicey. I guess there’s enough fanservice every time Mikuru does her meido routine and when Haruhi cosplay rapes her.

Oookay. So, beneath that cold exterior, lurks the heart of a megalomaniac with a Borg-fetish? ;)

Still, Yuki episodes aren’t anything to complain about… although if anyone else clicked on the Novel Translation link above, am I the only one who’s kinda disturbed to see Yuki doing the same sort of ‘nyah!’ eye-tugging thing that Haruhi was pulling in Ep 9?

No, not a magalomaniac but the heart of a RTS gamer. RTS old school doesn’t require killer graphics but instead… micromanagement, multitask, macro, queue and pathfinding. (Resource management taken out of this game though).

Mikuru Bridge Bunnies… I’d like to see that. In various uniform styles: Meyrin Hawke, Maya Ibuki, Ruri Hoshino etc etc.

Zyl: that’s an EXCELLENT idea. Meyrin Hawke, Maya Ibuki, Ruri Hoshino, maybe a ‘Mariyu Ramius Bouncing Chest’ version… oh, and “Crest of the Stars” variations. :D

Ah well – it appears that even Yuki has hobbies; which are, in this case, beating the absolute crap out of everyone with a limited number of units. Gee… didn’t she do that last week too? :D

I’d say it’s more likely that Yuki likes the game because of the micromanagement parts and the programming things. Computers, if I must say, can be said as efficient data management and execution machines. I’m guessing that Yuki just likes to play around with it.

Zyl;Haesslich: Yes, wouldn’t we all like to see the Mikuru Bridge Bunnies :).

Regarding the use of Epson on the notebooks, I downloaded the HD Raw just now and instead of Epson, it’s ESPON. Maybe a little play on words regarding a certain Esper? Eh, maybe I’m pushing it.

Also I noticed other than the usual Windows icons in the background, there was also Google Earth on Yuki’s desktop. Thought that was interesting.

    Definitely a nice Yuki episode.

BrianTT: It’s a tradition with manga and anime – to avoid copyright issues, they tend to change names a bit: Sony turns into Pony, EPSON turns into ESPON, and so on.

And Kurogane: Epson used to make computers and monitors over here – I’ve seen them, but not in years. They still do manufacture them for Japan though:

Voila! I haven’t seen one of these in years, myself – not since the last time I was in that neck of the world.

That’s why. Over here, at my place, Epson is more famous for their printers rather that their laptops.

It’s probably before your time, Kurogane: Any Epson computer gear I’ve seen is from the 1980′s, with the latest appearance of one in the early 1990′s – a monitor, to be exact.

Oh those cats are probably “Neko-man”s. Haha, not to mention M’Quve’s vase, Kyon’s “Die, dragonflies!” and “Computer-ken ni eikou are~~”
