well I rather refer to those 'god' as Demiurge.

(All of a sudden I wonder if a little bit of Nanoha will slip out of Rika-chan. I am not looking for Rika-chan doing a Raging Heart though :P)

Gods and demons are not necessarily mutually exclusive here. Gods sometime demand horrific, evil if you really look at it a certain way, sacrifices and some interpratation of 'Oni' puts them as 'guardians of the land'. And the amalagam of long dead anscestors lines are often seen as gods in their own right. Remember Shinto as most of us understand it is not the end all be all of abroiginal Japanese belief, that was very much a creation of government to pursue intergration. Spirits, gods, demons are universal but belief vary widely from place to place. And the village of the setting is far enough in the middle of nowhere that the national government didn't even blink when it first considered burying it under a lake.

Hmm...interesting theory, but isn't the Oyashiro-sama the guardian of the village from ancient times. I thought the original villagers worshipped him too.

This brings back to mind the theory that Rena and Mion are not really friends, but avatars of a God and Demon respectively. The reason why they do not attack each other? The same reason why a country would not nuke another country that has nukes. Mutual destruction. :P
