EVA RE-TAKE
Just read finished the translated versions of STUDIO KIMIGABUCHI’s RE-TAKE series, which is a retelling of the story of Evangelion, a what-if that Shinji was revealed to the events of the End of Evangelion before it happened and tried to change the outcome of the series.
It’s quite possibly one of the best doujins that I’ve read in recent times, with a totally heavy focus on storyline, executed masterfully and elegantly, that even Anno Hideaki would find it a good one, retaining the infamous “brainfuck” property of the original EVA series.
Art is pretty good and the doujin artists made a pretty good effort to emulate Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’s style, causing less of an “art shock” that’s typical of most series doujin’s. This doujin is undeniably for mature audiences, with some sex scenes that are actually contributing to the storyline though, and more importantly going down the Shinji x Asuka road. I personally prefer Asuka over Rei, most probably for my bias now on *tsunderekko*’s.
I highly recommend this series to any EVA fan, hardcore enough to explore other possibilities. But for those underaged, be warned :). I’d like to thank the translator of this doujin for his/her effort in bringing this doujin to the non-Japanese enlightened, like me ^_^.

I agree, definately best doujin. In regards to the EVA contiuum it’s done extremely well. The events that unfold in this doujin are plausible events that could happen in the EVA universe. The people who did this doujin really kept loyal to the EVA series in every aspect. I’d like to see their other works too.

Hiya, I’m Anonymous Spore, the guy who translated the RE-TAKE series. I’m currently going over it again and redoing it in the spiffy font that I did R-T 0 in.
I did it cos I thought it was the best eva doujin I’d read (although to be honest, I haven’t read that many) and I was surprised that it hadn’t been translated into English. It was my first (and currently only) translation job, which is why the font and stuff is so crappy.
The wait until August is killing me. XD
Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you liked RE-TAKE 0 as well. It was my favorite out of the current 4. :P

Can anyone recommend where I could buy the actual doujinshi for a decent price? I have issue #2 and #3, and I’ve seen some advertisements for the other books, but the prices are way overvalued. BTW, for fellow LAS (Love Asuka Shinji) fans – best books in my opinion are the Peppy Angel/Cherry series. Thanks!

Thank you very much Anonymous Spore for translating this, for it really is an amazing work, and trust me, you’re not the only one who is anxiously waiting for August 2006, (or sometime later, considering I’m sure you’ll take a bit to translate it). And while I agree that the authors have kept with the Eva reality amazingly, there are 2 things that really bug me.
Minorly, what Shinji finds in terminal dogma, and how it got there, and majorly, how nice Gendo is to Shinji in one scene in volume 2.
I do have one question about the translation, however. I noticed thoughout the story various things like “how disgusting” and “I feel sick” show up, and I just want to know, were they all originally “Kimochi warui”?

Awesome series. Episode 2 was so emotional for me that I was getting teary-eyed(sp?) near the end. It was amazingly well done, and Spore, I must thank you for brinign such an amazing fan fiction to use english speakers. I am, howerver, slightly confused as to is the actual dojinshi being releashed in August, or the english translation?

I believe the fourth volum itself will be relased in August (this Sunday based on the most recent rumors I’ve heard). The translation will obviously take some time, especially if the volume will have about 200 pages as they say. I wouldn’t expect it to be that long, though.

If it is published in Japanese, the translator still has to translate it. And if it is as large as I have heard it is (200 whomping pages!!), that could take a while.

I’m a big fan of re-take. one of the few doujins i’ve read that i really like. With my limited japanese i can tell you that it’s already been released. it was released on the 11th of August. Unfortunately kimigabuchi hasn’t released re-take 4 for online purchase at dslite.com. so for now you can only get it if your in japan.
can’t wait till someone scans it and of course whhen its translated. finally there’s a trailer on the site for rt4. http://www.kimigabuchi.com/ and click on the button above the red price tag. you should now see a table with ＲＥ－ＴＡＫＥ４ and in cells nxt to it you should see links windows, macos9/10
choose your version right-click and save. i thnk it looks good and seems to give nfo on what’s to come, prob is that it’s in jpn.

Well, I wanted to talk with you more throuh ICQ or mail… A little offtopic, really.
But if you want to talk here… I’m from Russia. Translating manga, like you. But not from fapanise, but from English. And now I really want to translate Re-Take. So, I’m asking your permission for re-translating Re-Take, using your translation.
If it’s OK with you, then – some other questions.
2) When (approximately) will you finish translating vol4?
3) If you doing the script version of the translation first, then could you send me this version? And it would be even greater, if you’d send me parts of the script, that are already done, while the work is still in progress. In that way the russian version would be done almost as fast, as eanglish ^_^ (and of corse, I just can’t wait to read it at least a little further >_>)
4) What about “Re-Take – Interval” (the short novel (not manga) in two parts, that is taking place between vol1 and vol2)? Will you translate it?

well gonzalo, I think I have an answer to both your questions:
WARNING: SPOILERS!!!!
1) that little kid is no other than “another” person who decided to come back as a single entity (separated from the LCL soup). We have to remember that in the anime it is explain to shinji that anyone that wanted to comeback to life would remember how to do so (this occurs in EoE, before shinji returns). Being this said, this child is a “new born” (not necessarily related to shinji or asuka, if anyone thinks that….well I did for a little)
2) moooost definetly snoring aka sleeping

OOOHHHHH, by the way, has anyone notice these little things:
1)this doujinshi grabs both version of the story (anime and manga, mostly manga)
2)even though it has original drawings an all, it does use quite a lot of images of the manga, yeah…..quiiiiiite a lot, but it’s still good…no ….its great
3)How impresive is to me that in Japan copyright is so permissive, I m pretty sure if this would have been done in any other country, they would sue their a…..es to no end. juaja

well corintium, i agree with answer n1, it’s quite possible rembering the eoe, i also agree that this doujinshi is spectacular, almost one of the best i’ve read so far. but i do believe that at the end both of them died since asuka told shinji ” but in return at the end, please die with me” in more than 1 ocassion and since “there is no future for them in that place”. but then again they could just be sleeping, since lots of things changed from when asuka asked shinji to die with her, so now she could also want him to just “be” with her and not “die” with her. both endings are just fine with me since you can see that they no longer have all the problems they’ve been carring through all those worlds(basically asuka’s hate and shinji’s guilt) and they can finally accept each other and just be happy as they are now. once again grat doujinshi.

First off, there be SPOILERS in this comment~Read at your own risk!
Secondly, I just finished reading vol.4 of Retake, and wow, to quote my reaction after watching the Eva tv series ending and End of Eva (which I see as being concurrent, btw) WTF?! O_o
Seriously though, I found this doujinshi to be beautiful! (It’s a shame there aren’t more H doujinshi like this that use sex as part of the plot as well as for romantic purposes and not just random “fucking”. For instance, there’s this one doujinshi I’ve found called “Only Asuka 1999″(thru 2002, at least that’s what I’ve found, maybe more were released?) which seems to be a really nice Shinji/Asuka story, but then Kaworu shows up and Asuka gets into a distrubing sexual realtionship with him that she can’t get out of. I wish I could find the rest of these, as well as them being translated! )
Anyway, I think the ending of Retake was similar to Eva itself where it ulitmately means what you want to it.
Though, here are my own theories:
1) Shinji and Asuka are alive, (just sleeping or unconscious?) and they’ve finally accepted each other after all that happened. Basically “they’ve forgiven [each other], so now they can find happiness”, to quote various characters who said that this volume. ^_^
2) The little girl at the end who leaves the Sea of LCL? At first, I was thinking she was Shinji and Asuka’s daughter (espeically how their daughter herself/”God” told the mindless past Asuka to get along with Shinji), but looking at it again, I guess she’s just a child who could envision herself and thus decided to return to Earth.
3) Because Shinji and Asuka’s daughter, “God”, appeared, prehaps she was the child Asuka was pregnant with, thus is part Angel, hence her status as God??
This was a beautiful series and the romantic in me (and the Shinji/Asuka fan in me, hehe. XD) can’t recommend it enough! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Anonymous Spore, for uploading and translating such a beautiful story, and thank you to Studio Kimigabuchi for making it! I can only wonder what GAINAX and Anno-sensei would think of this masterpiece. I’d think they’d be proud because this captures the spirit and psychological aspects of Eva to a T. ^_^

Well, them Japanese are perverts :P. Still, I agree with you on this point.
For my thoughts on the ending of RE-TAKE. I agree that both Asuka and Shinji are just both taking a break and have accepted each other.
As for the girl, that appears at the end (who strangely looks like Envy from FMA), I’m not really sure whether to take her as one of the random people who rejected Instrumentality or as Asuka and Shinji’s daughter.
So far, I’d rather prefer on the random person theory, as in the “original” storyline, Asuka and Shinji haven’t got to each other yet XD.

Here’s 2 more cents – I see that some of us arent sure if Shinji & Asuka are dead or asleep – I assumed they were asleep, but now am reconsidering. Asuka kept demanding the she and Shinji die together. If they did die together, then maybe the child is a merging of the two of them.

Well, the release date seems to be on the 31st of December, which is quite soon. Hopefully it’ll be good.
The title is RE-TAKE ~after~, so it could be an epilogue of sorts. There’s quite some questions not yet answered in the end of RE-TAKE.

this is one hell of a doujin series.
does anyone have any other suggestions for good evan doujins? preferably Shinji x Asuka since, after reading Re-Take, it’s the only thing I want to see =D

Amazing doujin, beats the living shit out of those official spin-off manga of GAINEX.
Preserves a healthy chunk the emotion and mystery that made EVA what it is, though Rei’s new personality threw me off a bit (not a bad character, in fact I liked it, but just not totally in sync with the series like the most of the other characters).
Can’t wait for spore to translate ~after~… Actually, does he have a website? Would make it easier for me to check for news of ~after~, which has become almost a daily chore.

THIS HAS TO BE THE GREATEST MANGA OR STORY FOR THAT MATTER I HAVE EVER READ! i loved the eva anime and hail it to be the greatest achievment in moving pictures and animation and all of storytelling. however this beat it by like half a percent. phenominal. it is emotionaly moving, and most of all it makes you think. the one thing the world kind of threw out, thinking. By the way is ~after part of the series/ about to download it anyways…Again, amazing…

I agree that this was a truly amazing story. I might even go so far to say it’s worthy of being a sequel to the events in End of Evangelion. Makes for a better story than my idea of them sitting there on the beach working out their problems anyway :-P. I must say though, despite the H-scenes being more relevant to the plot than other doujinshis, they felt needlessly tacked on and often could have been substituted for images of the two embracing or kissing. When Asuka the much-overused phrase that she’s dirty down there, the overall feel of a good story kinda fell flat on its face before having to lift itself up again.

Wow. I just finished reading this doujinshi. It is incredible & brought out so many different emotions in me. I loved how it stayed very true to the series & answered so many different questions, yet it still left scores left unanswered.
I can only hope that the creative team that made Evangelion read this doujinshi. This is how the series should have ended.

Evangelion RE-TAKE(The best Evangelion sequel ever made!)
Story 10/10
The story is one of the best I have ever read. Its focus is on Shinji and Asuka, but it’s still packed with action. The sex scenes are a part of a plot and nothing else. My favorite is Evangelion RE-TAKE After. It’s the final volume to the series it has the scene where Shinji is thinking if he really love Asuka because he can’t remember his feelings back then. The ending was magnificent!
Art 8/10
The art was not as great as the original creator.
The story of RE-TAKE was the best! I think that Yoshiyuki Sadamoto should make this the
real sequel of The End of Evangelion. I just wish! XP

I just finished the entire doujinshi today, and its now 6 volumes long. (Probably completed) The author has created in total about 5 endings for Evangelion. Though several are written off as alternate realities or Shinji’s mind coming to terms with EoE, they each made sense and stuck to the character’s personalities. I honestly can’t see a better ending to the series for any reader. Except in one ending Shinji had to have boinked a retarded Asuka and then married her. (They say her mind is still at a child’s level when the child is being raised.)
My favorite aspect of this doujinshi was that Shinji applied his knowledge of the future so readily. Shinji showed the same determination and resolve any Evangelion fan felt when they dreamed up a way of preventing the tragedies of the story. I really want to share this doujinshi with everyone Evangelion fan out there.

I read from 1 to 3 and i got disturbed because of shinji being an angel and asuka being as crazy as kyoko did

You know, I’d like to comment but the link for 04’s dead. However, from 0-3 I like how Shinji is a much stronger character than the weaker ones in the other endings. And as open as I am to it, the sex was a bit much. Even though it does elaborate on the suggestiveness of the original series as a “possibility”, I think that the series would have been alot more entertaining and not drive me crazy if it went in a more logical, action-based deviation. Yea, I know, it’s for the art though. But I do find that this ending is a lot more self-explaining than the others and I can find more of a closure from it. But I’d like to see the final issue! I’d really appreciate it!

I’m hoping this group continues to do good work. I was ticked at EVA’s ending until I read this. Its good enough that I can pretend its canon, and lay the original series to rest.
