Hellsing Ultimate 01

Hellsing Ultimate 01

YES!!! IT’S OUT!! Well, not the DVD version, but the pre-release airing over TV, so quality isn’t top-notch, but still, really really good.
The first OVA mainly focuses on events in the first volume of the manga, which is the introduction of the characters, Seras Victoria’s induction into Hellsing and the infamous fight between Alucard and Alexander. Fans of the Hellsing series will no doubt have no need for summaries for this.

First of all, Hellsing Ultimate is more faithful to the manga’s style, with the art closely following Kouta-sensei’s style rather than the earlier TV series. This is most noted by the inclusion of the funny SD sequence in the middle of the episode, closely mirroring Kouta-sensei’s liking for including in SD sequences in non-action parts of the story. The animation is great, as expected and the action sequences are fantastic to behold as well.

However, there are a few down points as well, which is the general feeling of it being rushed. Seras’s induction to Hellsing was cut to only a few short moments and the action then jumps to the first Alucard vs Alexander fight. There wasn’t too much focus on Seras, but this is in accordance to the manga, although I would’ve liked it if they introduced her properly. I suspect there are parts cut off to fit in the TV screening as this episode only ran for 27 minutes rather than the reported 35 minutes. I guess we’ll have to wait for the DVD to come out to compare.
Ok, just read from the Animesuki forums that this is supposed to be a “digest” version of the OVA, whihc pretty much confirms my thoughts :). I’ll cover the DVD as well, when it’s released on the 10th later.

One more disappointment was the new soundtrack. I was hoping for the reuse of the original TV series soundtrack as any decent Hellsing fan worth his salt would tell you that it was the only high point of the Gonzo production. The new soundtrack is OK, but not as impressive as the TV series’ one :(.

I had a field day taking screenshots, so enjoy the 135 I took. It took me quite a while to crop it to that figure from the original 300+ I took :).

    Yes, fleaks…

Don’t ask me what that means :P. It either shows they have a bad command of english or they have seriously wicked sense of humour.

My guess is, that they’re bombing us fans who rush them :P. Notice the “OVA Digest for Fleaks”.

    @ZMag
Heh, thank god **I’M** on broadband :P. As for subbers, Hellsing Ultimate has been licensed by Geneon, so it might be hard to find one. Hopefully, the hype itself will help.

Now it makes sense why the animation was so horrible. I’ve never read the manga and I’ve actually loved the TV series, so I obviously thought this was some perverted production of Hell Sing where the attempt seemed like a cheap way to make money by using the Hell Sing hype. I’ll be relieved if it indeed was no more than an attempt at to be funny.

  6. Kurogane Said,

    January 24, 2006 @ 2:10 am

Well, the art for the OVA is using the original manga style, so it might not seem to be as good as the Gonzo’s one, but for manga purists, the story of Hellsing later on is truly epic and deserves animation.

In any case, just wait for the true DVD release later on the 10th.

Now I see why everybody is drooling up and down over this…

    *drools…* Must… resist…

Now, I’ve yet to read the manga, but I can see the characters’ “dehumanised” forms (in Gonzo’s version, they have straight teeth) are really what makes them stand out: their vampiric nature.

Now time for ultimate writhing in pain of just wating!

  8. CRAMPS Said,

You know, I don’t know how some people can really like the TV version of Hellsing from Gonzo. I mean the story was pretty shallow and the story really never ended. The manga version at least gets to the bottom of things. So yeah if this animation is really faithful to the manga version it would be amazing. The art looks pretty similar, though really the manga hellsing art changes every volume (compare v1 to v7. yep whole new style) so yeah i wonder if the look in the animation will change every OVA lol (don’t worry im not counting on it).

Still waiting for v8 to be released. Waiting for quite a while now.

Theres no R in Japenese Language so its Fleaks

  10. Akuma-sama Said,

    February 3, 2006 @ 10:11 am

Wrong, there is no L, the standard romanization is Ra Ri Ru Re Ro. The sound is similar to an L/eastern european R, so the R sounds can be used to write Ls. (Hence, Rollercoaster would be written Ro-Ra-a-ko-su-ta-a.
In this case, Fleaks is what we call an Engrish. :P
    [/Japanese lesson]
    and yeah, can’t wait for the OAV itself… the TV series was good at first, but quickly dropped in quality ’till it was crap. Harry’s explosive death just made me go wtf, among other things ^_^;;;

Answer is…… I don’t know :P. I’m not a US citizen, so I’d be damned if i know/care :). As stated earlier though, it’s licensed by Geneon (USA) so I’d say you might get an inkling where it is somewhere on their website. Google for it, I’m lazy to find the URL.

I was looking for Hellsing screen shots in general, for some project or another that I had in my head…and this turned up!

I am absolutely in love. I’ve only seen volume one of the manga (I’m dirt poor T_T) but I’ve seen the anime a few times through. (well…the “old” anime now I guess?) So far I really am in love…true, I miss some traits of the “old” anime, but there are a lot of things that make up for it, so it all balances out.

Thank you for posting these lovely screen shots!

I’m completely confused. Is this new OAV rehashing some – or all of the story from this set:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008L3MH/qid=1140816149/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5305949-8758359?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130

    ?

…or just history snippets and more of the story development from the manga?

It looks cool and fairly in-line animation-wise – there is a certain continuity … but some of the above screen shots look reminiscent from the above mentioned box set. i personally enjoyed the anime episodes (and the music) – you hardly ever get manga and anime that are complete “story faithful” but then film and print are different mediums. in any case, i can’t find any mention of ‘offical USA release’ – although it was mentioned in passing at the NYC convention (today).

Hellsing: Ultimate is a completely new anime from the original Hellsing. Disregard the first one, pretty much. :P

The new Hellsing anime is devoted to the original manga and currently in the process of being released to the public. The link you gave us was just the old animes DVDs.

    Final Products:
    1. Original Hellsing manga (the original, and the best! XD)
    2. Original Hellsing anime (only started like the manga, different story)
    3. New Hellsing manga (frames are shots from the anime)
    4. New Hellsing anime (like the original)

Unrelated, but ESSENTIAL. If anyone knows how to contact the Wild Geese (creators of the Hellsing OVA) we would be doing wonders for future episodes, and the climax of the series to have them use the song: DRACULA BLUTHOCHZEIT by the german group
E NOMINE. Download this song yourself, and you WILL agree there is NO song more perfect for the series! Especially for the ova of manga 8.

    undoubtedly my favourite anime
is it just me or are good animes never quite good enough?
loved the depths of darkness i was dragged into but
a feeling lingers of incompleteness of the journey
    albeit great artistic ingenuity,
red nights and jazz to name a few
wouldv’e expected some sort of vampire hunter d sountrack
    nevertheless it worked
otherwise, same boat as rest of you

justin grandit, hellsing has awesome dubbing, so try listening to it in english. if you have already then i must tell you this: Alucard sounds much better in english than japanese, and this is thanks to Crispin Freeman, my fave voice actor (alucard’s eng voice in hellsing, and he also did rude’s voice in ff7 advent children). subs dont always kickass. crispin freeman’s voice is something that you dont forget, it is what made the hellsing anime famous in the US. any true hellsing fan would watch it in english, u dont have an excuse not to.

on a higher note, bought a copy of the fisrt ova episode, loved it, hoping to get it in English soon as i find it.

those of you who havent read the manga, i highly recamend it to you.

Yes! dracula bluthochzeit would be a great song for hellsing, though i doubt they’ll buy the rights to put it in the anime.

I’m a hellsing fan, and I agree that I appreciate hellsing for its gritty feel, and this just made up for the TV series, although I was hoping that seras wouldn’t be so much of a fan service

…and as much as I like E Nomine’s Dracul’s Bluthochzeit, there is just too much talking. The songs are to tell a story… don’t want to sound too negative, but I LOVE THESE PICS!!

I love this pre-release. It was way better than the Hellsing TV-series, and (like you said) more loyal to the manga. Can’t wait until the DVD is out.

Does anyone know the significance of the quote from the Ripley Scrolls?
“The Bird of Hermes is my name, eating my wings to make me tame”
Is it a reference to Arucard in that his power is being limited by Hellsing in order to control him? Or is it something else?

This anime is certainly going to be far better than the ‘original’. I’ve only watched the first episode, but it looks absolutely awesome.

Hellsing rocks harder than Jesus lol but ya the OVA version looks pretty good lacking the cool intro and stylish music of the first 13 eps but like anything it will only get better (hopefully =P) anyways I am Canadian and I herd the the realese date for the OVA version on DVD was 12/5/06 December,5/2006 for your nubs =P is that a true date cuz Ive looked for the english version on DVD on big name sites but can’t find it so I am guessing that the english version will come out on that date specified above.

The original OVA for Hellsing was great. The manga is just greater than great. And the fact that Ultimate is following the lines of the manga is just JAW DROPPING, DROOLINGLY, BONERIFICALLY AWESOME!! I don’t care what the price will be, but this anime is a MUST to the collection. Yah I read on Geneon’s official website, geneonanimation.com that Geneon’s official first volume with the first two OVA eps. is being released on the 5th of December 2006. I’ve already pre-ordered. CAN”T WAIT! Both Japanese and English vocals for Arucard are superb, but if I had to pick for the one that best captured the essence of the true Nosferatu, it would the be original Japanese vocal. I enjoy both. And just for any Noobs who always wonder why it’s “Arucard” and “Alucard”; It is that in Japan, they don’t have the “L” sound/letter pronounced, so in substitution it’s “ru”. Both are right in their own context. I prefer the Japanese pronunciation. It just rolls across the tongue better, and sounds more powerful which the Japanese language is like.

I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS NEW SERIES TO COMPLETE!!! acutally I would rather it not to end…

I am very sorry, but i must say that this version, although keeping to the manga storyline, looks to me to be far too Americanized, and i shall therefore not contribute to the funding of this “anime” as you all call it, yes it is bloodier, yes it is by the manga, and yes it keeps most of the original artist’s style, but it is way too Americanized, the Japanese wouldnt make something this…gorey, even to entertain us Americans, i am deeply sorry, but if i must rate this, i would give it an A for effort, but F for overall.

  82. Zanath Kariashi Said,

……you’re joking right? True Japanese anime evented gore….and sex…and most of that other stuff people get all excited over. Amercia just copied it so much that it seems the norm. However, enough about that.

EPISODE 2 IS AWESOME!?!?!?!? Can’t wait for english language version of the first, which comes out day after my B-Day. I’ve been stuck with the spanish subtitled for soooo long….I was actually hoping to preview it on Youtube or something first though, just as a percaution, but I’m weak of will….I’ll buy it anyway, and just switch on the subtitles with japanese dialog if I think the english isn’t good enough….Also, can’t wait for the offical subs for episode 2, ones I ended up with are pretty good, but the horrible grammer and litteral translations lessen the effect. Can’t wait for episode 3. It’ll be good to see Dandy Man getting his due, animated. And at last baring no relation to the tv anime version, which should at least keep people from getting confused….I really need to go buy the manga sometime…it’s been forever since I read 3-6.

  83. Fawnet Said,

…yeah. I mean, the OVA is pretty violent, but it’s only fleshing out scenes from the manga, which is equally violent. And the manga is pretty definitively Japanese, so…*shrug*
Not that I blame you, I actually think the OVA is going to appall some people, just as it overjoys some others. But there’s nothing particularly “Americanised” about it. it’s just a violent–and fascinating–story.

I just received the hellsing ultimate dvd that has been released and I enjoy it thoroughly as I did the manga and the laste tv series. The only real problems I have are A. The translators did a horrible job on some Key things on the packageing the spell Alucard Arucard, big problem, well to me any way. In Japan they have a hard pernouncing certain letters which puts people into thinking that it is allways spelled the way it is pronounced, this is wrong. Fleaks?? I dunno now maybee their doing it on purpose or maybee it comes with what I said earlier about pronunciation. Oh well I enjoyed your Review and your screen shots are wonderful. Have fun, Ja.

Oh dear I forgot to menton the other thing that bothered me but I will state this is my oppinion. B. I loved the old voice actors they really got into character but in this one most of the voice actors are sadly lacking. Alucard is wonderful of course. And so is Integra and Seras but Walter and Alexander Anderson and most of the others I found very much lacking. My sugestion to those like me, watch it japaneses you wont be so dissapointed as the the voices and translations oh well

Umn you musted not have watched the original tv series because all of the voice actors from the 2001 series are present in the 2006 OVA. (Main Characters) the American voice actors, I just got thru watching the trailer and was trying to figure out what you were talking about? Same voices kid, try again and next time make sure you got your’e facts straight! ;)

  91. Emma Said,

    February 24, 2007 @ 12:27 pm

The first episode came out in (English) on December 5th. The second one is due out in English on the 31st of March, and the third one…They had a set date for February 7, but unfortunately got delayed due to making the figure (I know, rather sad). No trailer has been released for the third OVA, but pictures have! I don’t have a direct link, however. I’ll try to remember to post back when I get any other scrap of information for the second OVA and the third.

Oh and to the voice-actor comments, there are a few new actors. A main one is the actor of Alexander Anderson, and I find it beautiful. It’s a natural Scottish accent (the Paladin is SCOTTISH, thank you) and it rolls off the tongue. Lovely, if I say so myself.

  92. ben Said,

since OVAs are more heavily based on the manga, this will most likely make more sense than the original show. I’ve read a couple of the mangas, and watched all 13 episodes of the show on the internet. I love it! this one looks beautiful. and I have yet to see it, I will probably end up buying it (and the second) though.

Righto, seems like 4.4.2007 is now the new release date for the third OVA.
    Hopefully, it’ll hold.
