Anime = Animated Sex? Part 2 : Kudo’s to The Star

Just about a week ago, the KOSMO! Anime = Hentai controversy erupted resulting in the newspaper receiving tons of hate from the although small, but still sizable and vocal anime fans community in Malaysia.

Now this morning, I’d just picked up the newspaper to read, and being a loyal reader of The Star, one of the top and most widely distributed newspapers nationwide, I was pleasantly surprised that their Variety section had a 3 page article on anime and manga fandom in Malaysia, which is quite unprecendented over here. Plus, it was just the inaugural article for a new weekly column, OtakuZone, which as it’s namesake, is a column focusing on anime and manga.

I’m glad for The Star for starting this column as this is a positive step into increasing the exposure of anime and manga in Malaysia, by featuring it in the mainstream newspapers. Hopefully this will bode well for the otaku community in Malaysia. Kudos to the OtakuZone team :)

Below I’m including scans from the article itself. I apologize for the quality though, n00b at scanning :P.

**Edit:** Thanks to a reader of my blog, Mike, who gladly fixed up all my scans together in one page, it’s now much more easier to read it. Get it here.

Now THIS is what articles about Anime and Manga should be like. The one by kosmo was just, pft….. Teruk lah. Very poor assumptions. Probably not enough proper research before writing the article. The fans definitely didn’t let the reporter go easy. :p

Kinda true, if it wasn’t for jeff’s site, I wouldn’t even know about this thing in the first place.

But anyways, support The Star!!! :)

So much for the controversy. Now I can go to Malaysia and feel happy to be an otaku! (Living south of the Causeway kind of sucks when the choice of anime here is very limited across the video stores.)

The Star has always been a decent paper. They always have trend-friendly sections like on gaming and outdoors and kids actvities. Good to know they keep their attitude with anime.
