2005 – A Lookback in Anime – Spring & Summer ’05

Firstly, I wish all my readers a Happy New Year. Hopefully the next year will bring in much good things ^_^. Darn, this post took me 1 year to finish, XD.

Basically, I actually missed out on spring and summer anime but I did catch up on a few series’, so I’ve decided to combine both seasons in one post.

1\. **Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan**

Source: Unknown

Easily earns the “WTF?!! Anime of the Year Award” with it’s combination of *guro* way exceeding most action series’ and hillarious characters. It also managed to popularise the term “HAADO GEI” amongst otakus, setting a trend. Be warned before watching this anime, a strong stomach is ***REALLY*** recommended.

**Rating**: 7.5/10

2\. **Futakoi Alternative**

Source: Unknown

One of the few surprises that jumped out from the Spring ’05 anime lineup, as the first Futakoi was as generic as harem as you get, FutaAlt truly is as “Alternative” you can get with it’s combination of guns and twins, oh and not to forget, the giant squids as well. The story of Rentarou and the Shirogane twins is a good one however, dealing with loss and happiness.

**Rating**: 7/10

3\. **LOVELESS**

Source: Unknown

Yes, I did watch this, but not for the yaoi, so no “HAADO GEI” accusations please. Yaoi-ness aside, LOVELESS is an interesting watch for the characters and the art. Providing quite a lot of eyecandy (for the fangirls, that is) and with some nice action, it’s an OK watch.

**Rating**: 5/10

4\. **He is My Master**

Source: Gainax Top Images

Gainax forays into the *meido* genre again, with HiMM, and manages to produce a series heavily laden with fanservice, which is, admitedly, one of their strong points. A series to be enjoyed after shutting off your brain and giving in to your id :).

**Rating**: 6/10

5\. **Speed Grapher**

Source: Speed Grapher Official Site

One of Gonzo’s anniversary projects. And actually for a Gonzo work, it isn’t really half-bad, with themes like genetic manipulation, secret gov’t projects and the gap between the rich and poor. The beginning was quite good, but the quality was dropping towards the middle and degenerating in to a monster-per-episode series, but however, Gonzo managed to pull the ending off nicely and in a dramatic manner as well.

**Rating**: 6.5/10

6\. **Tsubasa Chronicle**

Source: BAnime

**CLAMP**’s latest work, featuring the mother of all crossovers and one of the most recognizable couple in anime/manga, Sakura and Syaoran. For me, who followed the manga since it’s beginnings, there were quite a few things I didn’t really agree about it first, mainly the quality of the art. The slight changes in the story and anime-only additions in the early parts initially turned me off, but I followed it and it improved a bit towards the end. Still, it really doesn’t match up to the manga and still room for much much more improvement. The best aspect of this series is still Yuki Kajiura’s soundtrack and Yui Makino’s voice :). Hopefully the second season will be better.

**Rating**: 5/10

7\. **Honey & Clover**

Source: Unknown

Ah… what can I say about this show? Many bloggers have already agreed on Hachikuro’s greatness, me included as well, with many having given it the “Anime of the Year” award, and it is really well deserved. The cast of memorable characters, heartwarming stories and great art and music makes it one of the best anime series to be made. Much kudos to J.C. Staff for bringing this great piece of work to us all. I still owe this show a rewatch as well :).

Rating: 9.5/10

8\. **Trinity Blood**

Well, I’ve done a much extensive review for Trinity Blood, so I’ll won’t say much here :).

9\. **Pani Poni Dash!**

Source: Unknown

One of the major trend-setting anime of this year, with it’s over-the-top humour, numerous obscure references to anime/manga series’, cast of funny characters, great music and overall, it’s sheer randomness, PPD is definitely a series not to be missed by anyone with a slight interest in anime/manga. I really shouldn’t need to stress about the greatness of this show and let everyone decide from themselves.

**Rating**: 9/10

10\. SHUFFLE!

Source: SHUFFLE! Game CG

One of the best harem series to emerge in recent times, SHUFFLE! is a masterpiece of storytelling, with each of the girls given attention and still having roles in the show way after they’re turn is gone, unlike AIR, SHUFFLE! should really be on the watchlist of every romance drama fan. Sparking tons of debates over forums and even on blogs about the girls, SHUFFLE! is definitely a series to be remembered. Oh,and errm… I’m still behind you, Kaede-chan!!!

**Rating**: 9/10

11/. **Full Metal Panic : The Second Raid**

Source: Unknown

Same with Trinity Blood, I’ll redirect you all to my more extensive review of it.

12/. **Saikano OVA**

Source: Saikano Official Site

A short extension to the Saikano universe, from the point of view of Chise’s predecessor. Nothing much was added in to the overall plot, but we did get a little more insight on Chise’s suffering. Box of tissues recommended.

**Rating**: 5/10

    HAPPY NEW YEARS!

LOL Loveless reminds me of Eerie Queerie especially with the pic on this post.

Plus I totally agree with you on Shuffle! It’s one of the best series ever and I am really glad I stuck with it. Despite it having a really slow start…the end was terrific! I can’t wait until the final eppy!

    [Might have some spoiler]
Okay, I’d like to say that almost anyone who would give, “Club To Death Angel Dokuro-chan,” a better review than, “Speed Grapher,” obviously didn’t watch either of those anime’s. Okay some points about, “Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan,” 1: Sakura, wtf man. Okay I understand you like Dokuro-chan, and that she’s pretty hot–but god damn it! Enough is enough, slap that woman. 2: Pipiru piru piru piru pipiru pi, seem’s right all wrongs. Just like no one cares that Dokuro-chan is murdering, or using her magic to transform people. The characters are just so bland it makes my eyes bleed, “oh sakura you bastard! Picking on a little girl.” Come on, these characters are being force fed on you like the rest of this anime. 3: Repetitive, I repeat, repetitive. Every episode seems’ to be about the same thing–Dokuro-chan kills Sakura, and then makes everything right again by reviving him. And then the last what, 2 episodes they throw in some smidgen of story (which is also bland). 4: I think I’m done actually.

    Possible Pro’s of Dokuro-chan:
    -Bloody as all hell!
    -Blood
    -Panties
-Big breasted loli’s (if your into that)
    -And more blood

“Speed Grapher,” doesn’t get off easy, I like it more than, “Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan.” But it still had some fail in it.
    Cons:
    a) The animation is a bit lacking in most episodes. It seem’s to go from, Good, Bad, Good, Bad, Good, Bad, maybe repeat. This happened alot in, I believe episode 5.
    b) Over half of the series they get you to really hate the bad guys like you should. Then at about episode 16+, they want to let you know that, Suitengu and his group should be looked at as anti-hero’s, more or less.
    c) OH SURPISE THIS ANIME IS ABOUT CORRUPT GOVERNMENT! Yes, this whole anime believe it or not isn’t really about, Kagura, or Saiga, thats just a small part of the whole. It’s about how money corrupts the government. And you don’t really see this until about..oh…episode 16+.
    d) I really don’t have anything else, like I said I liked this one. Don’t get me started on Tenjho Tenge though, thats another anime that cut short of expectation.
