Firstly, I wish all my readers a Happy New Year. Hopefully the next year will bring in much good things ^_^. Darn, this post took me 1 year to finish, XD.
Basically, I actually missed out on spring and summer anime but I did catch up on a few series’, so I’ve decided to combine both seasons in one post.
1\. **Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan**
Easily earns the “WTF?!! Anime of the Year Award” with it’s combination of *guro* way exceeding most action series’ and hillarious characters. It also managed to popularise the term “HAADO GEI” amongst otakus, setting a trend. Be warned before watching this anime, a strong stomach is ***REALLY*** recommended.
2\. **Futakoi Alternative**
One of the few surprises that jumped out from the Spring ’05 anime lineup, as the first Futakoi was as generic as harem as you get, FutaAlt truly is as “Alternative” you can get with it’s combination of guns and twins, oh and not to forget, the giant squids as well. The story of Rentarou and the Shirogane twins is a good one however, dealing with loss and happiness.
Yes, I did watch this, but not for the yaoi, so no “HAADO GEI” accusations please. Yaoi-ness aside, LOVELESS is an interesting watch for the characters and the art. Providing quite a lot of eyecandy (for the fangirls, that is) and with some nice action, it’s an OK watch.
4\. **He is My Master**
Gainax forays into the *meido* genre again, with HiMM, and manages to produce a series heavily laden with fanservice, which is, admitedly, one of their strong points. A series to be enjoyed after shutting off your brain and giving in to your id :).
5\. **Speed Grapher**
One of Gonzo’s anniversary projects. And actually for a Gonzo work, it isn’t really half-bad, with themes like genetic manipulation, secret gov’t projects and the gap between the rich and poor. The beginning was quite good, but the quality was dropping towards the middle and degenerating in to a monster-per-episode series, but however, Gonzo managed to pull the ending off nicely and in a dramatic manner as well.
6\. **Tsubasa Chronicle**
**CLAMP**’s latest work, featuring the mother of all crossovers and one of the most recognizable couple in anime/manga, Sakura and Syaoran. For me, who followed the manga since it’s beginnings, there were quite a few things I didn’t really agree about it first, mainly the quality of the art. The slight changes in the story and anime-only additions in the early parts initially turned me off, but I followed it and it improved a bit towards the end. Still, it really doesn’t match up to the manga and still room for much much more improvement. The best aspect of this series is still Yuki Kajiura’s soundtrack and Yui Makino’s voice :). Hopefully the second season will be better.
7\. **Honey & Clover**
Ah… what can I say about this show? Many bloggers have already agreed on Hachikuro’s greatness, me included as well, with many having given it the “Anime of the Year” award, and it is really well deserved. The cast of memorable characters, heartwarming stories and great art and music makes it one of the best anime series to be made. Much kudos to J.C. Staff for bringing this great piece of work to us all. I still owe this show a rewatch as well :).
8\. **Trinity Blood**
9\. **Pani Poni Dash!**
One of the major trend-setting anime of this year, with it’s over-the-top humour, numerous obscure references to anime/manga series’, cast of funny characters, great music and overall, it’s sheer randomness, PPD is definitely a series not to be missed by anyone with a slight interest in anime/manga. I really shouldn’t need to stress about the greatness of this show and let everyone decide from themselves.
One of the best harem series to emerge in recent times, SHUFFLE! is a masterpiece of storytelling, with each of the girls given attention and still having roles in the show way after they’re turn is gone, unlike AIR, SHUFFLE! should really be on the watchlist of every romance drama fan. Sparking tons of debates over forums and even on blogs about the girls, SHUFFLE! is definitely a series to be remembered. Oh,and errm… I’m still behind you, Kaede-chan!!!
11/. **Full Metal Panic : The Second Raid**
Same with Trinity Blood, I’ll redirect you all to my more extensive review of it.
12/. **Saikano OVA**
A short extension to the Saikano universe, from the point of view of Chise’s predecessor. Nothing much was added in to the overall plot, but we did get a little more insight on Chise’s suffering. Box of tissues recommended.
