Winter ’05 season was basically a hit-or-miss season, with only a few series I found interesting and even less that were actually good.
The true gem in this season, with Kyoto Animation’s anime adaptation of the popular AIR *bishoujo* game setting up all benchmarks for animation quality. The most memorable thing about the anime was the oh-so-beautiful renderings of the backgrounds and fluid animation. It’s worth buying the DVD just to sit down and admire the greatness of Kyoto Animation’s art team. The series itself also have a gripping and poignant story, only marred by the “wandering focus” storytelling and the 13 episode limit.
2. Aa! Megami-sama TV
Unarguably the slowest romance story in the anime/manga world, with the manga currently running for more than 17 years with no sign of progress, the TV adaptation of A!MS remains faithful to it’s source material and also tastefully upgraded the setting from the late ’80’s to the present. The powerful cast of seiyuu’s gave it much needed star power to attract the fans, but it still felt quite lacking and a bit mediocre to me. A second season is currently in the works, which hopefully will be able to match up with standards set by the A!MS movie.
3. Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~
One of the unexpected gems to emerge from this season, with it’s laid back approach and comedy generated by the heroine’s MPD. In all aspects, this series was quite enjoyable from the art, music, characters and storytelling. Defintely a must-watch for all rom-com lovers.
4. Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu
A 6-part OVA detailing about the relationship of a boy who meets a girl with special abilities. Taking elements from Saikano and etc.., it manages to tell a good story but however lacks in impact. But still, worth a watch for the solidity of it’s storytelling, character designs and animation.
